The skin tends to dry with time, and that is why the Proofide cream allows a treatment of the leather that reintegrates the original oils of the skin. Brooks recommends using a small amount of Proofide regularly. Four times a year can be more than enough. Rub the Proofide into the skin with your fingers and let it rest for one night. In the morning polish the dry residue with the cloth and you will be ready to leave.
The key is used to put the saddle back into the right tension to compensate for the stretching of the leather. It is designed to fit the tension nut under the saddle, where the standard keys would be too tight.
